DATE: The latest date I see is 1991; That is the only date I see SOME OF THE NARRATIVE TEXT: Major league baseball has known many black ballplayers who have achieved levels of greatness and been accorded the status of superstar. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Lou Brock, Maury Wills, Bob Gibson, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Rod Carew, Juan Marichal, Willie Stargell, and Reggie Jackson are only a few from this lengthy list. But before 1946 blacks played baseball in separate leagues-they were not allowed to play in the majors because of the color of their skin. In the so-called Negro Leagues, "only the ball was white," and the players, every shade of black, were the predecessors to the great major league baseball players with whom we are so familiar today. In 1920 the first black league, the Negro National League, was founded, followed in 1923 by a rival league, the Eastern Colored League...In late 1945 Jackie Robinson, after having completed his only season in the Negro Leagues (with the Kansas City Monarchs), signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers...The history of major league baseball will remain forever marred by its early policy of segregation.
