Description
Wooden statuette of Hakon, the official mascot of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, stands six inches tall. Around his neck is the identification tag stating that Hakon is carved in wood and decorated by hand in Karasjok, Norway. On the bottom of the statue, it states that Hakon is made in Nodeland, Norway. As I cannot find either Karasjok or Nodeland in my atlas, I suspect something has been lost in translation. Two languages (really dialects) are spoken in Norway, and perhaps that accounts for the mystery. In the fall of 1993, I was asked to give a tour of the research homes of the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) to a delegation of Norwegian homebuilders. At the conclusion of the tour, the head of the delegation presented me with this Olympic souvenir. It resided, quite out-of-place, on a shelf with my wife's Chinese Export China until we both decided less was better. The years have been kinder to Hakon than to me. There are no chips, scratches, or other signs of wear. Even the little leather string holding his identification papers remains pliant and youthful. Perhaps it is jealousy that drives me to sell him rather than simply trying to get rid of some of the surplus stuff I have accumulated.
