Veterans of one of the most noteworthy fights of the twentieth century, the offered lot derives from the June 18, 1941 bout that saw Billy Conn, known to the boxing world as "The Pittsburgh Kid," come within a hair's breadth of dethroning the great Joe Louis. Few had given Conn much of a chance against the great "Brown Bomber," but the determined fighter had given up his Light-Heavyweight title in May of that year to challenge Louis for the Heavyweight belt, doing so at just 174 pounds, twenty-five lighter than even a slimmed-down Louis. And challenge him Conn did. For twelve rounds the smaller man adeptly danced and jabbed, confounding Louis with his elusiveness and clearly winning the fight on the judges' scorecards. But Conn instead made a fatal error, craving the glory of a knockout, and attempted to trade punches with the hardest-hitting man in boxing history. The result of this hubris was predictable, and Conn found himself dropped to the canvas for a count of ten. After regaining his senses, he answered a reporter's question as to why he went for the knockout, "What's the point of being Irish if you can't be thick?"Presented here is an assortment of fight worn material from the fight considered by most boxing historians as among the greatest in Heavyweight title history. 1) Satin pre-fight robe. Cream-colored with embroidered green "Billy Conn" across back. "Benlee Sporting Goods" manufacturer's label inside collar. Minor age toning but no significant condition problems. 2) Pair of "Benlee" gloves, with original laces. 3) Pair of black leather boxing shoes, replacement laces. 4) A broken jump rope used in training for the bout. All pieces come from the estate of Bill Joos, Conn's long time trainer, and are accompanied by a letter of provenance from Joos' daughter. LOA from Antiquities of the Prize Ring. Guide Value or Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000.Shipping: Clothing, Costumes & Jerseys (view shipping information)Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 100-110 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
