Description
In the heyday of the National Wrestling Alliance, independent booking agents  and promoters were left to speculate how the NWA's By-Laws were written to specifically keep them on the outside of the mammoth organization.  How did the By-Laws protect the NWA's members and what kind of language did its founders use in putting together the framework for their union? The drafted NWA By-Laws were deemed illegal by the Department of Justice and in accordance with the Consent Decree of 1956, the Alliance was forced to change its rules. A majority of wrestling fans have never seen the actual By-Laws of the National Wrestling Alliance, and this auction offers up three different variations: 1)  The original, illegal NWA By-Laws.  There are 15 Articles and nine pages of material.  Article IX is entitled "Territory." This regulation was found to be illegal in relation to monopolistic activities.  Among the other articles are "Name," "Purpose," "Membership," "Directors," "Officers," "Committees," "Meetings," "Annual Dues and Fees," "Territory," "Recognition of Champions," "Finances," "Calender Year," "Corporate Seal," Amendments." It talks about the expulsion and suspension of members, terms in office, the duties of officers, special meetings, the specific championships recognized by the NWA, and much more. 2)  The revamped By-Laws that were a work in progress as NWA President Sam Muchnick etched out a new set of rules with his lawyers - and sent to the Department of Justice in November 1956.  It was expanded to 16 pages and was a more socially acceptable version, making every effort to appease Government officials.  You can easily see the major differences between the first version and this one, including "Territory" being removed.  The NWA was evolving, but not by choice. 3)  16 Page By-Laws that were officially adopted in 1957.  This was the approved version.  I am including the correspondence between Muchnick's East St. Louis attornies and the Department of Justice from May and June 1957, which talks about some of the different issues that were being worked out. This was one of the harshest times for the NWA, and this collection offers insight into the progression of the organization's regulations from being in violation of antitrust laws to being in accordance with the Government. The NWA's By-Laws are some of the hardest documents pertaining to wrestling to find. Please ask any questions before bidding.
